Jean-Baptiste Racine was a French playwright, poet, and representative of classicism.
Born into a family of a local tax official, he was baptized on December 22, 1639.

His mother died in 1641 while giving birth to his sister Marie. His father remarried, but died at the age of twenty-eight. The children were taken in by their grandmother. At the age of nine, Racine became a student at a school in Beauvais, which was affiliated with Port-Royal.
